Strava – Focusing on Achievements

stravaAs its name would suggest, Strava (Sweedish for Strive) is a social network for runners and cyclists that encourages achievement and challenges your limits.

Like other competing apps, Strava enables you to track, record and share your activities. It splits the route into segments and provides stats based on collected data, such as duration, average and maximum speed, elevation, and other metric data. It also shows a leaderboard providing a comparison between you and other users. The fastest in a segment gets a crown icon and named “KOM” – King Of the Mountain.

Users are encouraged to strive by getting challenged, such as distance challenge, climbing challenge, and more. It also does so by enabling users to follow friends, watch their activities and achievements. Strava offers paid services for advanced users under the title Strava Summit, including training plans, safety services, and advanced analytics.

Personal performance dashboard and leaderboards encourage achievements and motivates improvement. However, pay attention not to be drawn into unhealthy competitiveness. At best, that may result in draining the enjoyment out of the activity, by focusing only on scoring a high rank, and at worse, may lead to injuries due to excessive effort.
